Summary
Belgium has announced stricter entry checks to combat illegal immigration and so-called "secondary migration," where asylum seekers already have protection or a pending application in another EU country. The measures will target key transit points such as motorway rest areas, international bus routes, the road between Dunkirk and De Panne, certain trains including those at Brussels Midi, and intra-Schengen flights from high-migration-pressure countries like Italy and Greece.

The controls will be carried out jointly by the federal and local police, along with the Immigration Department. Interior Minister Bernard Quintin emphasized that the goal is to curb illegal migration flows and strengthen national security. Asylum and Migration Minister Anneleen Van Bossuyt warned that without action, Belgium risks becoming a destination for migrants rejected elsewhere, declaring that the country will no longer tolerate illegal migration or "asylum shopping."

Similar measures have recently been taken by neighboring countries such as Germany and the Netherlands, which have reintroduced or extended temporary border controls within the Schengen Zone.
