South Africa is seeking reimbursement from several African governments after spending nearly $18 million to accommodate and transport tens of thousands of migrants returning to their home countries. Requests for compensation have been sent to Malawi, Ethiopia and Nigeria, with costs covering transportation, temporary repatriation centers and staff overtime.

According to South African government figures, 82,875 migrants have been voluntarily repatriated or deported since immigration tensions intensified, although figures from migrants’ home governments suggest the total may be around 178,000. Between April and July alone, 16,078 people, mainly from neighboring African countries, were deported.

The large-scale departures come amid growing anti-immigration sentiment. Protest groups blame migrants for unemployment, crime and pressure on public services, while attacks on foreign nationals have created diplomatic tensions with other African countries.

South Africa is also intensifying enforcement against illegal immigration. Authorities say nearly 60,000 undocumented migrants have been arrested, including more than 16,000 in July alone.
