Irish police arrest 23 people in second night of anti-immigration unrest
Release Date
2025-10-23
Media
ALJAZEERA
Summary
In Dublin, Ireland, 23 people were arrested after a second night of unrest outside a hotel housing asylum seekers. The violence followed earlier protests against government immigration policies, during which six others were detained.
Videos on social media showed demonstrators throwing objects and fireworks at police, injuring two officers. Police said most of the rioters were young men and teenagers. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the “thuggish violence” and vowed that those responsible would face justice.
The protests were sparked by the arrest of a 26-year-old foreign national accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl. The man had reportedly been issued a deportation order earlier this year after his asylum claim was rejected.
Opposition leader Mary Lou McDonald called for restoring public confidence in the asylum system. While far-right movements remain weak in Ireland, anti-immigration sentiment has been rising amid record migrant arrivals. In 2023, similar riots broke out in Dublin after a stabbing attack by an Algerian-born naturalized citizen.
