‘Like a horror movie’: Ice detaining German tourist in California indefinitely

Summary: German tourist Jessica Brösche, a 26-year-old tattoo artist, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after being denied entry at the San Diego border on January 25. She was traveling with her American friend, Amelia Lofving, and had the necessary documents, including a German passport, a visa waiver, and a return ticket to Berlin. Despite this, she was detained for a secondary inspection and accused of planning to work as a tattoo artist in Los Angeles, violating the terms of the visa waiver.

Brösche spent days in a cell before being transferred to the Otay Mesa detention center, where she was held for over a month, including eight days in solitary confinement. Her friend, Lofving, struggled to find her and eventually located her after using the Detainee Locator. Lofving attempted to have Brösche returned to Mexico but was told she would be deported to Germany due to her lack of legal residency.
