Voters Do Not Approve of Trump’s Immigration Crackdown When Confronted With Real-World Examples

Data for Progress
Summary
On January 24, former President Trump issued executive orders reinstating strict immigration policies. However, polling shows that when presented with real-world cases, voters tend to support more humane approaches.
Trump allowed ICE to resume arrests at sensitive locations like schools and churches, but most voters oppose this. His reinstatement of the "Remain in Mexico" policy is also unpopular, with many supporting asylum seekers fleeing violence.
Voters show strong support for accepting refugees, especially those escaping war and persecution. A 13-year-old Syrian boy and his family (60%-20%) and a Belarusian activist (52%-25%) received majority support for resettlement in the U.S.
The abolition of "catch and release," requiring detention of all migrants, lacks broad support. Many favor release for families with children but support detention for repeat border crossers (50%-33%).
Overall, while broad polling may suggest support for restrictive policies, when confronted with real-life cases, voters prefer compassionate and humane immigration policies.
