Trump administration sends first group of migrant detainees to Guantanamo Bay

Summary
The Trump administration has begun implementing its plan to turn Guantanamo Bay Naval Base into a large-scale immigration detention center. The first group of detainees, ten individuals classified as "high-threat," were sent from Fort Bliss Army Base in Texas to Guantanamo on February 5, 2025. These detainees are reportedly Venezuelan men linked to the Tren De Aragua gang.
The administration aims to detain up to 30,000 unauthorized immigrants with criminal records at the base. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up operations to support this plan, with daily arrests averaging between 800 and 1,000.
While Guantanamo Bay has long been used to screen asylum seekers intercepted at sea, the new detainees will be held in newly set-up facilities outside the existing Migrant Operations Center. The decision to use Guantanamo Bay for this purpose follows a directive from President Trump to house "hardened criminals" in the facility.
