US deportations to China continue amid shifts in immigration crackdown

Summary
The Trump administration has confirmed that deportations of Chinese nationals are ongoing as part of efforts to enforce U.S. immigration laws. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to remove undocumented immigrants, with cooperation from China increasing after a historically restrictive stance. Deportation flights resumed in June 2024, and the Biden administration has continued this trend, with five flights to China in less than seven months by January 2025.
The Trump administration has expanded the use of expedited removal, allowing quicker deportations without court hearings for immigrants who cannot prove continuous residence in the U.S. for over two years. This has led to a lawsuit from the ACLU, which argues that the policy violates immigrants' due process rights.
China, once resistant to accepting deportees, has become more cooperative, accepting Chinese nationals for repatriation after verification. Deportation costs are high, with estimates suggesting that removing 1 million people annually could cost U.S. taxpayers about $88 billion. Despite increased cooperation, China still refuses or delays some deportations.
