Summary
In the early days of his presidency, Donald Trump focused on fulfilling campaign promises to crack down on illegal immigration, announcing new rules to facilitate deportations. This included a surge in arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with 593 arrests on Friday and 538 on Thursday. Trump also sent U.S. soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border and relaxed restrictions on immigration enforcement near schools and churches. ICE, responsible for deportations, averaged 311 daily arrests in the 2020 fiscal year and deported over 270,000 people in a 12-month period.
Despite the Trump administration's show of force, some cities like Newark, New Jersey, raised concerns about alleged illegal arrests by immigration agents. New York City, in particular, prepared for possible mass deportation efforts, with sanctuary policies in place to limit cooperation with ICE. For instance, in 2014, New York City under Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped ICE from accessing jails. ICE, formed after the 9/11 attacks under the Homeland Security Act, has more than 20,000 personnel and a budget of $8 billion. While deportation flights and arrests by ICE are not new, the scale of enforcement during Trump's presidency drew significant attention and concern.
