REALIGNING THE UNITED STATES REFUGEE ADMISSIONS PROGRAM

The White House
Summary
The President of the United States has issued an executive order to realign the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). Key points include:
Purpose: Due to increased migration in recent years, the U.S. has struggled with absorbing large numbers of refugees, impacting public resources and safety. As a result, the USRAP will be suspended to ensure the program aligns with U.S. interests.
Policy: The U.S. will prioritize public safety and national security, admitting only refugees who can successfully assimilate. Additionally, state and local governments will have a role in determining refugee placements.
Realignment: The suspension of USRAP will take effect on January 27, 2025, with exceptions for cases deemed in the national interest. The role of state and local jurisdictions will be further examined to potentially increase their involvement.
Resumption Review: Within 90 days, a report will be submitted to assess whether resumption of refugee admissions is in the U.S. interest, with follow-up reports every 90 days.
Revocation: The executive order from 2021 related to refugee resettlement is revoked.
The order aims to protect U.S. interests while reconsidering the refugee admissions process and enhancing local involvement.
