Summary
During his first term, President Donald Trump significantly altered U.S. asylum, border, and deportation policies. He campaigned for his second term on sharply reducing both legal and illegal immigration and implementing what he called ”the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.” Immigration and border security were top concerns for voters.
Trump focused on several key policies, including the Alien Enemies Act, which he proposed using for deporting members of criminal gangs and cartels, and the potential end of birthright citizenship through an executive order, though this would require a constitutional amendment. He prioritized border security, including adding 10,000 border patrol agents and completing the border wall.
Trump also pushed for stricter foreign worker visa programs, aiming to reduce the number of foreign workers while advocating for high-skilled immigration, particularly for foreign-born college graduates. He tried to end the DACA program, which provides relief for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, and faced legal challenges in the process.
Additionally, his administration implemented the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases were processed, a policy that was reversed by President Biden. Trump also used Title 42 to quickly expel migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic and indicated he would revive this policy.
Overall, Trump's immigration policies were aimed at reducing immigration levels, reinforcing border security, and enforcing stricter deportation measures.
